In La Candelaria neighborhood, we can see and enjoy houses transformed into museums, walk along stone-paved narrow streets, visit churches, wander through small squares and admire the harmony among all the  architecture styles.

La Candelaria hosted nice and rich meetings, plenty of intellectual, literary, artistic and political discussions, still known as Tertulias.  Also, musical and theater performances have been held in La Candelaria for centuries, even today, throughout the year.

The Colón Theater has presented since its inauguration, operas, zarzuelas, concerts, music hall and theater plays. When Spaniards arrived  in the Bogotá’s Savannah, after a journey through some other native Indians towns, they found another Indian settlement at the foot of the eastern mountains. In this very place, known today as El Chorro de Quevedo, Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada founded the city of Santa Fé de Bogotá, and conducted a first religious ceremony in a rustic chapel made on wood and straw (August 6th, 1538).

The place was wisely chosen, it is framed by two rivers; one of them, The San Francisco River can be seen today along the Jiménez Avenue, as part of an ecological axis that was recently improved. All major events concerning Colombian independence from Spain occurred in this neighborhood of Bogotá, La Candelaria. Its complete historical and architectural legacy underwent a full recovery and restoration process; La Candelaria is a beloved patrimony of Bogotá.

These are some emblematic buildings from colonial times in La Candelaria:

La Casa de la Moneda, devoted to the production of gold and silver coins, with effigies of the Spanish kings  (this place houses a numismatic museum). The Colegio Mayor del Rosario, a university where José Celestino Mutis lectured about natural sciences, specially botanical science.  The Palace of San Carlos, permanent residence and office of Simón Bolívar’s,  The Liberator. During a murder attempt  in September, 1828, Simón Bolívar managed to escape, jumping from a window, after being informed by Manuelita Saenz that a group of conspirators was entering the palace. The list is very long, there are many houses and mansions, full of history and legends.
